“In 2014, I entered a plane heading to the United States of America. Being only 15 years old at the time, I questioned whether it was the right decision to go abroad this early. I missed my friends and family back in Germany, and I was nervous as I didn’t know what to expect in Arizona, where I would live for five months.

I remember being terribly nervous when leaving the plane in Tucson, Arizona. I remember my legs shaking as I was walking down the hallway. And I remember all this nervousness being blown away the moment I met my host family for the first time.

My American host family welcomed me into their home with so much love! I always wondered how they could love a girl like their own daughter/sister, when, a couple months prior, she was a complete stranger to them and was living in a whole different country. But they did, and my host parents and I have remained close ever since!

Going abroad during my high school time was one of the best decisions of my life. It made me grow as a person, it made me appreciate family (my natural one and the new one I found across the ocean), it showed me that anything I dreamt was possible, and it made me a #FearlessGlobalCitizen!

Traveling is one of my major passions now, and whenever I can afford it, I hop on a plane or a bus and travel to other countries. Having friends all over the world is awesome, because I can visit them and learn more about their culture! In my opinion, traveling enriches life and I am grateful to be able to go places and see parts of the world—without that, my life would be a lot more boring and empty!” ~ Anna from Germany
